DLA Piper adds tax partner Aalok Virmani to its Chicago office

DLA Piper is expanding its Chicago office with the arrival of Aalok Virmani as partner in the firm’s Finance practice. As a tax lawyer, Virmani will also support the growing demand for the firm’s Investment Management practice.

Virmani focuses his practice advising clients – both US and abroad – on fund and sponsor-level tax considerations with regards to structuring, operating and investment activities across different types of funds, such as private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, energy, real estate and special situations. Virmani has extensive experience in investor representations, secondary transactions, fund restructurings and minority investments in fund sponsors. He also advises family offices in connection with establishing investment platforms and management incentive arrangements.

“Aalok’s tax practice and background are well-known in the industry, which will strengthen and deepen our growing Investment Management practice,” said John Cusack, global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Finance practice. “Aalok will also bolster our transactional vertical in the Chicago market and beyond, which are two priorities for the firm.”

Virmani has past experience working in-house at Equity International – a private equity firm focused on investing in non-US real estate companies – where he oversaw the firm’s portfolio-level transactions, sponsor-level tax planning and compliance, fund formations and financial statement reporting. Virmani joins from Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he was a partner in its tax practice.

DLA Piper advises on all aspects of financing, across borders, sectors and financial products. The firm’s lawyers advise issuers, underwriters, selling shareholders, sponsors, arrangers, lead managers, originators, dealers, trustees and depositaries on a broad range of capital markets offerings, including equity, equity-linked and debt securities, structured and project financings and securitizations.
