Jan specialises in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, as well as in regulatory compliance.

Jan represents clients in a wide range of commercial disputes – from sale of goods and supply of services to complex construction and acquisition-related matters. He regularly acts in court proceedings, ADR and insolvency matters.

In his regulatory practice, Jan advises in areas such as financial services, gambling regulation, corporate compliance frameworks, data protection and licensing. Jan also represents clients before Czech regulatory authorities, including the Czech National Bank, the Ministry of Finance, the Office for Personal Data Protection and the Czech Telecommunication Office.

EXPERIENCE

  • Representing two companies belonging to MCI Group, a well-respected global event management company, in a dispute concerning the termination of a contract for the delivery of the Czech pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The dispute arose from the alleged breach of contract by the client as contractor and involves multiple mutual monetary claims.
  • Representing a Czech supplier of medical devices in a dispute with a Hungarian biopharmaceutical company arising from the sale of medicines used for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
  • Representing a global personal-care products manufacturer in ICC arbitration against a CZK500 million post-acquisition claim raised by a major Czech investment group.
  • Representing a US-based B2B cloud computing services company in arbitration before the Arbitration Court attached to the Czech Chamber of Commerce and the Agricultural Chamber of the Czech Republic against a multi-million USD post-acquisition claim raised by a Czech IT start-up.
  • Representing a Czech subsidiary of an international company that builds and operates mission-critical digital network infrastructure in court proceedings initiated by a former employee based on the alleged existence of a non-compete clause.
  • Representing a UK-based airline carrier in multiple disputes concerning the purchase of flight tickets by passengers at extremely low erroneous fares.
  • Representing a major oil refining company in proceedings before the Czech courts seeking the setting aside of an arbitral award relating to a CZK17 billion claim.
  • Representing leading Czech leasing companies in regulatory proceedings concerning applications for consumer credit provider licences. The work included preparation of licence applications, review of internal regulations and business processes, revision of customer contractual documentation, and representation before the Czech National Bank.
  • Advising a company specialising in certification and testing services for gambling operators on regulatory issues relating to the operation of gambling activities in the Czech Republic, including registration as a certified testing facility.
  • Advising an entity of one of Switzerland’s largest banks in connection with a significant credit facility threatened by default. The client had provided financing to a wealthy Czech individual who became subject to enforcement proceedings relating to claims exceeding CZK1.6 billion. The matter involved advice on Czech enforcement law and close coordination with DLA Piper’s UK team regarding English law aspects and enforcement against assets in the United Kingdom.
