DLA Piper boosts global Insurance and Class Action practice with partner hire in Australia

Global law firm DLA Piper announces that Insurance and class action specialist Tricia Hobson joins the firm’s Sydney office, effective 16 June.

Tricia joins DLA Piper from Norton Rose Fulbright, where she was a partner for over 13 years. During 2018, she was NRF’s first female chair of the Global Board, in addition to being the Asia Pacific Head of Insurance and Class Actions.

Tricia has worked within the insurance sector for more than 25 years, with extensive experience in claims, class actions, multi-party litigation, cross border disputes, investigations and arbitrations. In addition, Tricia’s experience extends to advisory work across risk, cyber, governance and culture.

Tricia has been noted in the Asia Pacific Legal500 “Hall of Fame” for insurance and is described by them as “a generational leader without peer for London market knowledge”. She is also a Band 1 ranked practitioner in Global Chambers, with clients regarding her as “one of the best class action lawyers in Australia”.

Tricia will, once travel restrictions ease, be a partner in both the Sydney and London offices bringing true connection between these markets. With Tricia’s international experience and reputation, her appointment underlines DLA Piper’s commitment to grow its global insurance practice. As one of the most recognised leading practitioners in Australia and the UK, Tricia will advance the firm’s London, European, and Australian practices, and will be able to leverage key market connections to develop further opportunities in the US and in Asia for the sector. The firm has also hired Insurance specialists Jane Childs and Rebecca Hopkirk as partners in London and Tricia’s dual office appointment will support them.

Global Co-Chairman Andrew Darwin comments, ”Tricia’s international experience and reputation are unrivalled. Her appointment is a demonstration of our commitment to grow our global Insurance capability. We are delighted to welcome such a highly qualified and well-regarded practitioner to our partnership.”

DLA Piper’s Managing Partner in Australia, Amber Matthews, added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Tricia and her team. She is a leading female partner in the Australian legal industry and her career achievements are impressive. She brings a wealth of governance and leadership experience and her Insurance sector expertise compliments and further strengthens our offering to clients in Australia and globally”.

Head of DLA Piper’s Australian Litigation and Regulatory practice, Cameron Maclean, commented: “We have always had a strong Insurance practice in Australia and it is also a key global sector for DLA Piper. Tricia’s hire brings market leading expertise and further demonstrates our commitment and ongoing investment in the sector globally. In addition, her class action and large-scale complex disputes experience is second to none, and complements the commercial litigation practice that we have been developing in Australia over recent years.”

Tricia’s arrival follows a number of partner appointments in Australia in recent months – including technology lawyer Anthony Lloyd and real estate lawyer Stephanie Lambert, as well as two internal partner promotions, Cameron Scholes (construction litigation) and Kelly Morrison (capital markets).
