DLA Piper’s Danny Tobey elected to The American Law Institute

Danny Tobey, Chair of DLA Piper’s AI and Data Analytics practice, has been elected to The American Law Institute, where he will serve as an advisor to the Institute’s “Principles of the Law: Civil Liability for Artificial Intelligence” project.

The American Law Institute (ALI) is the leading independent organization in the US producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and improve the law. It drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law that are influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.

A leader in his field, Tobey was named one of the most innovative practitioners of the last two decades by the Financial Times. The publication described him as a legal “pioneer” who has “been original, consistently impactful, and [whose career tells] the story of legal innovation since 2006.” He was also recognized by Chambers Global Guide 2025 as “by far one of the top leaders and industry experts in AI.”

Tobey has represented several of the major foundation model makers and five of the Fortune 10 on AI business enablement and risk management. His work on red teaming generative AI and proactive compliance was recognized by American Lawyer for 2024 best use of generative AI and by the Financial Times as the 2024 new service for the management of risk.

By participating in ALI’s work, its distinguished members have the opportunity to influence the development of the law in both existing and emerging areas, to work with other eminent lawyers, judges, and academics, to support the rule of law and the legal system, and to contribute to the public good.
