DLA Piper appoints new Brisbane partner

DLA Piper has today confirmed the appointment of Jack Brumpton who has rejoined DLA Piper as a Partner in the Finance, Projects & Restructuring (FP&R) practice.

Jack will be returning from renewable energy company Sun Cable where he was Senior Legal Counsel. Prior to that Jack had been Special Counsel at DLA Piper in Brisbane.

“Jack’s most recent work at Sun Cable and the firm’s focus on the energy and resources sector meant he was an outstanding candidate for partner,” said Amber Matthews, Australia Managing Partner, DLA Piper.

“Jack has advised clients across renewables, oil and gas, mining, and carbon credit projects. With the focus on energy security and transition to renewable energy, we see significant potential ahead for the sector in Queensland and beyond,” Amber added.

“As a firm we often see the return of former employees and Jack is a great example of that. It’s testament to our positive culture, which values in-house and sector experience, and to the opportunities that our global platform provides to young partners building their practice. We’re looking forward to welcoming Jack ack into the fold,” Amber said.

Jack has significant experience working on projects spanning Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and other regional jurisdictions.

DLA Piper has advised on a range of matters across the energy and infrastructure sectors in support of Australia's push towards net zero. This includes advising ENGIE on the development, construction and financing of the first phase of Project Yuri, which will feed renewable hydrogen into Yara’s existing ammonia plant in the Pilbara, Western Australia. It also includes advising BE Power on its $2 billion+ pumped hydro projects in Queensland, and BlackRock on its commitment to investing more than $1 billion to drive the build-out of 1GW of battery energy storage systems across Australia, through the acquisition of the impressive Akaysha Energy.

APAC Head of Energy, Stephen Webb, said Jack’s return to DLA Piper was a win for the firm, with Jack having played an important role in the firm’s long-standing relationship with the Government of Timor-Leste and having significant expertise in energy production, generation and transmission projects throughout Australia and the region.

“Jack has an international energy outlook which is important to our firm. From Australia, we are constantly advising on high profile and market leading transactions and disputes both locally and in Asia, often for governments and on matters of significance or first of their kind. The opportunity to act for clients ranging from sovereign governments to innovative disruptors is an attractive proposition and Jack fits into that work stream well,” Stephen said.

DLA Piper has recently, for the second year running, been announced by rankings provider inspiratia as having closed more deals in the renewable energy sector than any other law firm globally.

Commenting on his appointment, Jack Brumpton said he’s delighted to have made a return to DLA Piper.

“Having worked in private practice and in-house in the energy industry, I believe what DLA Piper offers to the energy and resources sector is unique and market-leading. The firm’s tireless client focus and global reach is a compelling career choice,” Jack said.

Ends.
