Ontario’s three days of paid COVID-19 infectious disease emergency leave extended to March 31, 2023‎

Shortly after we released our bulletin regarding the end of Ontario’s COVID-19 “deemed” infectious disease emergency leave (“IDEL”), the Government of Ontario announced that the paid IDEL program is being extended until March 31, 2023.

This should not be mistaken with the end of the temporary measures introduced by virtue of O. Reg. 228/20 under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 regarding Ontario’s “deemed” IDEL, which are still expected to end on July 30, 2022, as described in our bulletin.

The paid IDEL program requires employers to provide employees with up to $200 per day for up to three (3) days if employees are required to miss work for certain reasons related to COVID-19. Employers may submit claims to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to be reimbursed up to $200 per day for each employee who cannot attend work due to COVID-19.

For more information, please read our bulletin regarding the paid IDEL program, consult our ‎Coronavirus Resource ‎Centre or ‎contact any member of our DLA Piper Canadian Employment and ‎Labour Law Service ‎Group, who will ‎ensure that you are acting upon the most up-to-date information.
