DLA Piper recognised in Law Society of Hong Kong's 2020 Pro Bono and Community Service Awards

DLA Piper is proud to announce that the firm and 13 of its DLA Piper lawyers have been recognised by The Law Society’s 2020 Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Programme. DLA Piper won the Silver Law Firm award while its lawyers took home two gold, five silver and six bronze awards. The award recipients were:

Gold awardees: Aaron Chan and Wundy Lee
Silver awardees: Sharon Hui, Jane B. Li, Samantha Mak, Tracy Wong and Michelle Wong
Bronze awardees: Angel Chim, Benjamin Fung, Aaron Lau, Christine Liu, Edith Liu and Kelsey Wong

From July 2019 to June 2020, DLA Piper’s lawyers provided at least 2,500 hours of pro bono work supporting the community in Hong Kong. This work includes providing ongoing support to the DLA Piper-RainLily Legal Clinic, which was set up in partnership with the Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women. The clinic supports women who have been subjected to sexual violence or sexual harassment in accessing compensation. DLA Piper filed multiple sexual violence and discrimination claims to the Equal Opportunities Commission in Hong Kong to seek remedies. As of today, 35 lawyers in Hong Kong have participated in this Legal Clinic project, providing legal advice and representation to 27 victims of sexual harassment including several successful settlements.

In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, DLA Piper lawyers contributed to several Pro Bono projects supporting those most affected. These included assisting Justice Without Borders in preparing informative posters to empower foreign domestic workers to understand their rights and fight against exploitation by their employers. DLA Piper associates also advised on the PILnet's COVID-19 Response Project, which supported NGOs and social enterprises in Hong Kong in dealing with the increased need as a result of the pandemic, and provided support to the founding members of the COVID-19 Mental Health Relief Committee.
