Each year, we are proud to recognize the extraordinary pro bono contributions of our lawyers and business professionals.

Renee M. Schoenberg
Of Counsel, Chicago
With more than 45 years of experience representing tax-exempt organizations and donors, Renee serves as a trusted advisor to the firm’s pro bono practice. Each year, Renee assists dozens of nonprofits of all sizes – from small startups to large national and international entities – on federal tax, nonprofit corporate, charitable, operational, and transactional matters. In the past year, Renee advised an international organization focused on protecting the Antarctic. Within the United States, she assisted a nonpartisan voting rights organization in obtaining a major grant to support its work encouraging young people to participate civically.

Paolo Morante
Partner, New York
Paolo represents asylum seekers and other immigrants seeking refuge in the United States on humanitarian grounds. In the past year, Paolo has represented, among others, an asylum seeker, political refugees, a victim of mutilation, and a detained immigrant fleeing persecution. Paolo’s recent clients have come from South and Central America, the Middle East, and Africa.

Amanda McCaffrey
International Pro Bono Counsel, San Francisco
Since her time as a summer associate, Amanda has advised the country of Georgia in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on a pro bono basis. She served as a delegate to the 2023 and 2024 Conference of the Parties (COPs), where she represented the country. Amanda has also contributed to the firm’s efforts to assist Afghans in seeking asylum, including for a client who had been separated from his wife and three young children during the 2021 Kabul airlift . The client was granted asylum, allowing him to reunite with his family after more than three years apart.

Camila Fajardo
Junior Associate, Santiago
Camila has led DLA Piper Chile’s pro bono program since 2022. She has driven a 274-percent increase in pro bono hours in Chile since the beginning of her tenure through the implementation of new policies, refined case intake strategies, and improved reporting systems. Among her pro bono work, Camila has advised more than 30 non-governmental organizations on nonprofit regulation and social project management. Further, alongside New Perimeter, she has co-led pro bono seminars at two major Chilean law schools.

Taylor Dodson
Associate, Boston
Taylor’s pro bono work focuses on advocating for the rights of incarcerated youth. Drawing on her background as a juvenile public defender, she uses her knowledge of the system to investigate, support, and represent detained children. In collaboration with co-counsel, Taylor currently represents the family of an individual who was assaulted by prison staff while restrained.

Samantha Chaifetz
Partner and Co-Chair of Appellate Advocacy, Washington, DC
Samantha has led the filing of briefs for pro bono clients before the Washington, DC Superior Court and the United States Supreme Court, among others. She supervised an appointed Second Circuit appeal in an excessive force matter, a petition for a writ of certiorari to the United States Supreme Court in a criminal case, and a United States Supreme Court amicus brief in a civil case. Samantha also led four teams of lawyers handling expungement matters, revamping the template for motions to seal criminal records.

Jessica C. Wilson
Partner and Boston Litigation Practice Group Leader, Boston
For the past eight years, Jessica has led a team that, together with co-counsel, represents students with disabilities in an ongoing lawsuit against the State of Georgia for discrimination in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fourteenth Amendment. The lawsuit seeks relief for thousands of public-school students with disabilities who are placed in specific centers and classrooms separate from general-population students. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction requiring the state defendant to provide services necessary to ensure the students receive equal educational opportunities in classrooms with their non-disabled peers. In addition, Jessica has represented immigrant clients seeking humanitarian relief, securing asylum for a young college student from Afghanistan whose family actively promoted women’s rights.

Steven Autenrieth
Associate, Phoenix
Steven focuses his pro bono work on assisting United States veterans. He leads DLA Piper Phoenix office’s participation at the annual Maricopa County StandDown and bimonthly advice and referral clinics at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Resource Center in Phoenix. Steven works directly with the organizers of these programs, coordinates with firm billable clients and alumni interested in participating, interacts directly with veterans, and provides guidance to fellow volunteers. At the 2024 Maricopa County StandDown, DLA Piper lawyers and corporate clients helped more than 50 veterans have their driver’s licenses reinstated. At four VA Resource Center clinics, which Steven organized, firm lawyers assisted veterans with a wide variety of legal matters, from child custody and spousal support matters to landlord/tenant disputes.

Salvador Pantoja
Video Production Manager, New York
Salvador supports DLA Piper’s pro bono efforts through the creation and production of videos showcasing our lawyers’ work. His videos have highlighted our efforts to combat hunger, serve our veterans, and support those seeking humanitarian immigration relief. Additionally, Salvador volunteers as an interpreter in immigration clinics at the firm’s New York office.

M. Judy Calderon
Case Manager, Short Hills
Judy focuses her pro bono work on immigration matters, assisting families obtain asylum or Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. As a fluent Spanish speaker, Judy is a main point of contact with each family and, together with co-counsel, takes an active role in their representation. Along with her immigration work, Judy assists veterans and clients with family law issues.
