About

James Lee is a business attorney focused on strategic sourcing/outsourcing and complex commercial transactions involving intellectual property assets and cutting-edge technologies. He also represents companies and investors through all stages of the corporate lifecycle. 

James represents clients on joint ventures, strategic alliances and collaborations, revenue-sharing models, XaaS (anything as a service) transactions, and global transactions involving the procurement of AI systems and AI-related infrastructure. He also advises clients on outsourcing of key business and technology operations. As part of his general corporate practice, James provides counsel to companies of all sizes in corporate transactional matters, including M&A and venture capital/growth equity investments. A significant portion of James's practice involves cross-border transactions as he regularly helps domestic and international business entities invest, expand, operate, outsource, or build new facilities across borders. 

Prior to joining DLA Piper, James gained valuable experience in dispute resolution at a State Attorney General's office. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, and his B.A. and M.A., respectively, from Johns Hopkins University and its School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

  • Represents global AI companies in connection with complex technology-driven deals involving semiconductors, cloud services, and data centers
  • Represents large multinational corporations in connection with build-operate-transfer (BOT) models to set up Global Capability Centers (GCCs)
  • Represents the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, in connection with various venture capital and growth equity investments in the technology and healthcare sectors
  • Represented the corporate venture capital arm of the world's largest oil company in connection with its investment in a U.S. clean technology company
  • Represented an AI data center power management solutions company in its early-stage seed financing from various venture investors
  • Advises Hayfin Capital Management, a leading European alternative asset management firm, in connection with SEC reporting and disclosure requirements

Prior Experience

While attending law school, James was part of a Space Situational Awareness joint collaboration project for the United States Department of Defense. He was also on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Journal of Social Policy and the Law. As a summer associate at another Am Law Global 100 law firm, James helped update the Maryland General Corporate Law treatise, particularly as it relates to real estate investment trusts (REITs). 

Prior to law school, James served in the Korean National Police Agency and provided physical security for the President of South Korea.
